30 September 2017 – In conjunction with International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) offers Breast Screening suitable for woman of all ages. The promotion will be available from 2 to 31 October 2017 and redeemable until 30 December 2017.
Breast Cancer is sometimes found after symptoms appear, but many women with breast cancer have no symptoms. The aim of a screening programme is to detect cancer in the healthy asymptomatic person at an early stage whereby we can offer more treatment options and restrict the spread of the tumour.
Risks of having breast cancer are if you have a first degree relative with breast cancer, such as mother, daughter or sister who developed breast cancer before the age of 50, then you are at high risk, said Dr Shyja Abraham, a Radiologist at JPMC, advising to start the screening process 10 years before the age of your relative’s diagnosis.
On the other hand, if you have a second degree relative with breast cancer such as maternal grandmother or aunt diagnosed with breast cancer, the risk increases slightly and screening to be started at the usual age.
But having said this, she advised all women to examine their breasts once a month through self-examination practice and report any suspicious abnormality like a lump or nipple discharge to their doctor even if they have had a recent normal mammogram.
The Breast Screening Packages consist of two types of screening, Ultrasound Breast Examination priced at BND100 available for women below 40 years old and Mammography Screening priced at BND168 available for women above 40 years old.
An appointment is required for each of the breast screening packages, and there is a one-time registration fee of BND10 for any new patients to JPMC. Medical advice and recommendations will be based on case findings, clinical investigations, medical history and personal profile. Specialist appointments will be coordinated for those who may require.
The Department of Diagnostic Imaging is open from Monday to Friday from 8am to 12 noon, and from 1pm to 5 pm. On Saturdays, the clinic is open from 8am to 12 noon only.
